Effectively and Efficiently Getting Institutions to 100% Participation in Experiential Learning & High-Impact Practices
SOC for Honors and Undergraduate Research
Description:
SOC is the largest national database for undergraduate honors' students that lists tens of thousands of experiential learning and high-impact opportunities, including conferences, internships (virtual and on-site), journals, research, co-ops and funding opportunities. Administrators can upload, manage, and share opportunities for students.
Problem Statement
Opportunities are passing students by each year. Honors & Undergraduate Research offices don’t have the time and resources to effectively connect students to opportunities. Additionally, they have a difficult time collecting, organizing, and producing actionable insights from participation data that can be presented to the leadership.
Solution
SOC helps increase Honors and Undergraduate Research program visibility around campus, enables students to find more opportunities, streamlines office activities, and saves the institution time and money on outcome assessment and reporting.
Use Cases:
- For Students:
SOC is a one-stop virtual shop for students for all career-building and funding opportunities—tens of thousands, including undergraduate research & honors experiences, student conferences & student journals, internships, co-ops, scholarships & grants, juried competitions, volunteering opportunities, and much more—all in one place, tailored to student interests and goals. - For Faculty & Staff:
Share opportunities with your students, such as on-campus internships, off-site conferences, or an opening in your lab, for example.
SOC Honors/UR Additional Content
The Favorite feature (which is located as an icon at the top of the page of every opportunity) allows students to add specific opportunities to a “favorites” list. So, let’s say there is a conference the student wants to keep track of, or an intern program at a company they really like. All they must do is click the "Favorite" icon, and it will be saved to their list of "favorites." Once an opportunity has be "favorited," they will be notified (via automated emails) about any updates and/or important notices/changes about each opportunity they "favorite."
Use Cases for Students
Find everything in one place. Looking for an internship, research opp, event, volunteer program, or something else? No more wild goose chases. Find opportunities happening on-site/in-person/virtually/and/or remotely in one aggregated portal. We are your one-stop shop for all out-of-classroom experiential opportunities and high-impact experiences!
Students can add entire majors or areas of interest to their Interests list to keep track of all opportunities within their major. Every month (year-round) the student will get email newsletters with timely, relevant content and upcoming opportunity deadlines.
The participation feature allows users to keep track of which opportunities they have applied to and which they participated in. At the end of the semester, they can export this into a resume/ePortfolio; advisors can also track progress.
Most Popular Administrative/Faculty/Staff Use Cases
1) Data Collection & Reporting. Before SOC, Honors and Undergraduate Research (UGR) offices didn't have a centralized place to collect, organize, and analyze student opportunity participation and their outcomes. All these processes have been formalized and streamlined with SOC's Admin functionality.
2) Save Time with opportunity matching. Forwarding emails to students as you hear of things isn't the most efficient or effective way to share opportunities to students. SOC's marketing system allows Advisors and Honors/UGR Admins to share customizable groups of opportunities to customizable groups of students.
3) Improve Student Outcomes. SOC helps Honors and Undergraduate Research program Admins to help more students find more funding, co-op/research, and other engagement opportunities. By improving student access to opportunities, the programs increases Honors and Undergraduate Research program participation around campus, contributing to increases in baseline student outcomes such as retention, graduation rate, and career readiness.
