How do students use SOC?

Student Opportunity Center accelerates the scaling of experiential education & High-Impact Practices through customized implementation services. SOC provides solutions to centralize experiential learning opportunities, structures to embed experiential education in the curriculum, tools to connect students with opportunities, and the data infrastructure to analyze disaggregated participation and learning outcomes data. 

Currently, resources are siloed off and decentralized (i.e. internships in career center, events in SGA, funding in financial aid, study abroad in study abroad office, individual listings on departmental level and around the web, etc.), which means many students do not have a clear picture of what is available to them and do not participate in experiential learning to nearly the extent and quality that is possible.

SOC connects students to on campus and off campus opportunities through a variety of ways. We maintain and manage the largest national database of undergraduate research opportunities and work with a variety of content providers to curate listings of opportunities available to students nationwide. Institutions also integrate their existing tools such as the Career Center tool, Study Abroad tool, Library resources, SGA tool, etc. Partner institutions give their students access to the Student Opportunity Center, and we work with administrators to market the platform to the students to encourage and enable participation in a variety of High-Impact Practices.
